Google takes control of ‘Android of robotics’ project in quest for physical AI
Google has decided to integrate Intrinsic, Alphabet’s AI robotics venture known as a “moonshot,” back into its main operations after five years as an independent entity. This strategic decision indicates Google’s increasing commitment to advancing physical AI technologies by bringing experimental projects closer to its core business framework. Intrinsic has been dedicated to simplifying the programming, teaching, and operation of robots, aiming to become the equivalent of an Android platform for robotics, providing an accessible software layer and tools that facilitate the creation of robotic applications.
Originally, Intrinsic was launched as an independent company within Alphabet’s Other Bets division in 2021, a segment housing high-risk and speculative projects alongside ventures like Waymo and Verily. Despite the transition, clear details of the acquisition remain undisclosed, with assurances that Intrinsic will continue to operate as a distinct group within Google. Its collaboration will extend to Google DeepMind, leveraging DeepMind’s expertise along with Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud infrastructure. It is notable that DeepMind had earlier absorbed Alphabet’s Everyday Robotics unit in 2023 and introduced two AI models last year designed to enhance robots’ physical task execution capabilities.
