AI might end up creating more jobs than it ends - and these jobs in particular should be safest

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being viewed as a potential boon for the job market rather than a threat. Recent revelations from the World Economic Forum (WEF) indicate that AI could generate significantly more employment opportunities than it eliminates. The report predicts that while AI will replace approximately 92 million jobs by the end of the decade, it will also create 170 million new roles, resulting in a net increase of 78 million jobs. This finding challenges the initial skepticism surrounding AI, which was spurred by the rapid advances seen since the introduction of ChatGPT in late 2022. The landscape of work is swiftly evolving, with industries experiencing transformative changes due to advancements in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). As AI reshapes the job market, certain roles, particularly those involving clerical and secretarial work, are at risk of obsolescence due to automation. In contrast, fields requiring skills in AI, big data, and cybersecurity are witnessing rapid growth. For instance, roles in software and application development remain among the least affected by AI's expansion. Additionally, the demand for professionals capable of analytical thinking, leadership, and social influence persists, with traditional skills such as resilience and flexibility becoming increasingly valued. Companies are actively pursuing re-skilling initiatives, with 77% planning new training programs and 70% aiming to hire AI specialists. While AI is steering significant skill transformation, some roles, particularly those involving manual labor like farming and truck driving, are relatively safe from automation. These findings underscore the importance of technological literacy and the continuous adaptation of skill sets to remain relevant in an AI-driven future.
